The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team might be building a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.
