At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the national leader.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in public projects. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
